About eir broadband
eir is the former state telecoms operator and still the largest fixed-line business in Ireland. It runs two things that are easy to confuse: a retail broadband and mobile business selling directly to households, and open eir, the wholesale network that carries most of the fibre lines in the country — including lines sold to you under somebody else’s brand. If your address is served by open eir fibre, you can generally buy that same line from eir or from a reseller, and the difference between them is price, contract and support rather than the physical connection.
Its retail plans are structured differently from the rest of the market and the difference matters. eir sells on 24-month contracts with the discounted rate running the full term rather than the usual twelve, which looks generous until you read the two clauses attached to it. The first is a contractual price increase applied every April: the monthly charge rises by a fixed amount on each anniversary, whether or not anything else about the plan changes. The second is a one-off credit for new customers, applied to the account after the first bills.
Netted out, those two pull in opposite directions. The credit makes the first year cheaper than the advertised monthly rate implies; the annual rise makes the second year dearer. Because eir’s contracts run 24 months, you cannot take one without the other, which is why every eir figure on this site is shown as a first-year total and as an average across the full term rather than as a monthly price.
eir is the only provider in our data with both a contractual annual price increase and a one-off new-customer credit, so its headline monthly rate tells you less about the real cost than anyone else's. Both are folded into the figures on this page.

eir broadband questions
Is eir the cheapest broadband provider in Ireland?
On our ranking, yes — Fibre 500Mb is the cheapest plan we track over a full first year, at about €319.88. That figure includes any setup fee and deducts any one-off new-customer credit. Availability is decided by your address, though, so check the full broadband comparison and the provider's own eircode checker before ordering.
How much does eir broadband cost a month?
eir's cheapest plan opens at €34.99 a month for 24 months and then moves to €75.99 a month. Spread across the whole 24-month contract — new-customer credit deducted, annual price rise applied, that averages €32.82 a month. The monthly headline on its own is not the cost of the plan, which is why we publish both.
What broadband speeds does eir offer?
The eir plans in our data run from 500 Mbps up to 5 Gbps download, delivered over full fibre. What you can actually order depends on the network at your address rather than on the provider's price list, so run your eircode through the provider's checker first. Compare against every provider at the same speed on our broadband comparison.
Does eir increase its prices during the contract?
Yes. eir applies a contractual annual increase of €4 a month on each anniversary, on top of moving you from the opening rate to the standard rate when the offer period ends. Both are written into the contract you sign, so neither counts as a price change you can leave over. Our contract average applies the rise from the first anniversary onward.
How do I switch to eir?
Check availability at your eircode on eir's own site first — fixed broadband is sold address by address, and a plan advertised nationally may not reach you. If it is available, eir places the order and arranges any installation; you keep your existing service running until the new line is live, then cancel the old one, honouring whatever notice period it carries. Our guide to switching broadband covers contract end dates, notice and equipment returns.
