Smart Meter Electricity Tariffs explained
A smart meter tariff charges you a different rate depending on when the electricity goes in. ESB Networks has been installing smart meters across the country since 2019, and once yours is in and communicating, you become eligible for the time-of-use plans on this page. The meter itself is free and stays the property of ESB Networks; the tariff is a choice you make with your supplier afterwards.
Irish suppliers generally split the day into three bands. Day covers most waking hours, night runs roughly from 11pm to 8am at the cheapest rate, and peak covers the early evening — usually 5pm to 7pm on weekdays — at the dearest. The precise hours are set by the supplier, not the meter, so check them on the plan you are considering rather than assuming.
Whether a smart tariff saves you money comes down entirely to how much of your usage you can move. Every annual cost on this page is calculated on the same assumed split of 63% day, 28% night and 9% peak, which is a reasonable national average but is not your household. If you have an electric car you charge overnight, a heat pump on a timer, or a hot water cylinder you can heat at 2am, your night share will be far above 28% and a smart tariff will beat a flat rate comfortably. If everyone is home from five, cooking and running the dryer, the peak band can wipe the saving out.
The practical test is to open your smart meter data — suppliers publish it in their app or on request from ESB Networks — read off your own day, night and peak shares, and enter them into the profile control on the main electricity comparison. That re-ranks every plan on your real profile rather than on an assumption.
Smart Meter Electricity Tariffs questions
What is the cheapest smart meter tariff in Ireland?
At 4,200 kWh a year, the cheapest smart meter tariff we track is Smart Green 15% Discount from SSE Airtricity, at an estimated €1,296.92 for the first year. It is also the cheapest plan on the whole market at that usage.
How many suppliers offer smart meter tariffs?
We track 13 plans of this type from 7 suppliers: SSE Airtricity, Energia, Electric Ireland, Waterpower, Community Power, Bord Gáis Energy, Yuno Energy. That is out of 26 electricity plans in total, so the choice here is wide. If your meter limits you to a short list, compare on ongoing cost as well as first-year cost before committing.
Do I need a particular meter for these plans?
Yes. Time-of-use plans for households with a smart meter installed by ESB Networks, priced differently by day, night and peak. You cannot choose your meter type from a supplier's website — it is determined by the hardware installed at your property by ESB Networks. Check a recent bill: it will show whether you are billed on one register or two, and a smart meter is normally identified by name. Annual costs assume 63% day, 28% night and 9% peak usage. That split changes the answer a lot, so adjust it to your own on the main electricity comparison.
Should I switch meter type instead of switching supplier?
Sometimes. A smart meter is installed free by ESB Networks and opens up the widest set of tariffs, including flat ones, so upgrading rarely costs you options. A day/night meter only pays if you genuinely shift a large share of usage overnight. Before changing anything, compare what you would pay on every plan across every meter type — the difference between meter types is often smaller than the difference between suppliers.
