The same plan (Home Electric SST Saver 16%) priced at the three usage presets used across this site. A low user is hit harder by the standing charge, a heavy user by the unit rate — which is why one supplier can be cheapest for a flat and dearest for a family home.

About Electric Ireland
Electric Ireland is the domestic supply arm of the ESB and the successor to the old state electricity monopoly. It remains the largest residential supplier in the country by customer numbers and, because it inherited the incumbent’s customer base, it is the supplier most Irish households are already on when they first think about switching.
Its plan range is the broadest we track. It covers standard 24-hour meters, day/night NightSaver meters and smart meters, and it splits again between a green-tariff line and its Home Electric bundles. The headline discounts are applied for the first 12 contract months and then the account rolls onto the standard rate, so the plan that looks cheapest in year one is very often not the cheapest thereafter. Most of the discounted plans require both direct debit and paperless billing; drop either and the discount can be withdrawn.
A few things worth watching. Electric Ireland’s standing charge is at the higher end of the market, which matters more the less electricity you use — a light user can pay more here on a low unit rate than on a rival plan with a higher rate and a smaller fixed charge. Existing customers are not moved onto new discounts automatically, so a household that switched to Electric Ireland several years ago and has never called is almost certainly on the undiscounted standard rate today.
Switching away is free and takes roughly two to three weeks. You need your MPRN from a recent bill, a meter reading and bank details; the supply itself is never interrupted.
Electric Ireland is the only supplier in our data that still sells a full NightSaver (day/night meter) range as well as smart and standard 24-hour plans, so it is usually the first place to look if you have an older two-rate meter and no smart meter installed yet.

Not on average usage. Electric Ireland's best plan, Home Electric SST Saver 16%, ranks 6 of 26 plans we track at 4,200 kWh a year, at about €1,518.67 for the first year against €1,296.92 for the market leader. See the full cheapest electricity providers ranking.
How much does Electric Ireland electricity cost per year?
At the 4,200 kWh a year the CRU uses as a typical household, Electric Ireland's cheapest plan comes to roughly €1,518.67 in the first year and €1,756.53 a year once introductory pricing ends. What meter types does Electric Ireland support?
The Electric Ireland plans in our data cover smart tariff, standard 24-hour, day/night (nightsaver) meters. Your meter type is fixed by the hardware on your wall, not by the supplier, so check which one you have before comparing — a smart tariff on a household that cannot shift usage to the night band will usually cost more than a flat rate. See smart meter tariffs for how the bands work.
How do I switch to Electric Ireland?
Switching is free and takes about two to three weeks, with no interruption to your supply. You need your MPRN, which is printed on any recent electricity bill, a current meter reading, and bank details — direct debit is required on the discounted plans. Set a reminder for month 11: the first-year discount ends at month 12 and the account rolls onto the standard rate. Our switching guides walk through the whole process.
