1Gb Broadband in Ireland
A 1 Gbps plan is the fastest broadband most Irish addresses can actually get, and the tier the providers push hardest. It is delivered either over full fibre — a fibre line running the whole way into the house, from the SIRO, National Broadband Ireland or open eir networks — or over an upgraded cable network, and the retail price at this speed has fallen close enough to the 500 Mbps tier that the upgrade is frequently only a few euro a month.
Whether that few euro is worth spending depends entirely on the number of people in the house rather than on what any one of them is doing. A single 4K stream does not need a gigabit and never will. A household of five, each with a phone, a laptop and a television, and one of them downloading a 120 GB game while another is on a call, is exactly the situation a gigabit is for. If your current connection only feels slow at particular times of day, that is congestion, and a bigger number will help.
The catch at this tier is that the advertised speed is a maximum to the router, not a promise to your laptop. Wi-Fi is usually the bottleneck: an older router, a wall or two, or a device with an ageing wireless card will happily cap a gigabit line at 300 Mbps or less. If you are paying for this tier, connect at least one device by ethernet cable and test the difference before you conclude the line is underperforming.
As at every speed, compare the total rather than the opening rate. The table below prices each plan across a full first year and across its whole minimum term, with the setup fee added, any new-customer credit deducted, and any contractual annual increase applied from the anniversary onwards.
1Gb Broadband questions
What is the cheapest 1 Gbps broadband deal in Ireland?
The cheapest 1 Gbps plan in our data is Fibre 1Gb from eir, at an estimated €379.88 over a first year — €39.99 a month for 24 months, then €85.99. That figure adds any setup fee and deducts any one-off new-customer credit. Availability is decided by your address, so check the provider's eircode checker before ordering.
Which providers sell 1 Gbps broadband in Ireland?
5 providers in our data sell at this speed: eir, Virgin Media, Sky, Pure Telecom, Digiweb. That is who advertises it nationally, not who can deliver it to you — fixed broadband is sold address by address, and the networks that reach any given house are a matter of where the fibre or cable was built.
Do I actually need 1 Gbps broadband?
Gigabit fibre and cable plans: the fastest tier that is widely available across Ireland, and the usual step up from 500 Mbps. As a rule the number of people using the connection at once matters far more than what any one of them is doing: a single 4K stream needs around 25 Mbps, and a video call rather less. If your connection only feels slow at particular times of day, that is contention between devices, and more headroom helps. If it is slow all the time on one device, the problem is more likely Wi-Fi or the router than the line.
Why is the first-year cost different from the monthly price?
Because almost every plan at this speed is sold on an introductory rate that expires. The first-year column adds twelve months of whatever you actually pay — opening rate while it lasts, standard rate afterwards — plus any setup fee, less any one-off new-customer credit. 1 plan here carries such a credit. The average-monthly column also applies the contractual annual price rise that 1 of these plans carry, from the first anniversary onwards.
