About Virgin Media broadband

Virgin Media is the one provider in our comparison that owns the network it sells on. Its cable infrastructure, built out across Dublin and the larger urban areas over decades, is entirely separate from the open eir and SIRO fibre networks the other providers resell — so at an address it serves, it is a genuinely different connection rather than the same line under a different brand. That also sets the limit on it: outside the cable footprint, Virgin Media broadband simply is not available, and its availability checker is the only way to know.

Owning the network shows up in the plan range. Virgin Media sells a small number of tiers, each offered on both a twelve-month and a twenty-four-month contract, and prices them keenly at the point where its footprint overlaps with fibre competition. There is no setup fee and no contractual annual price rise on the plans in our data, so the first-year figure and the contract average diverge only because of the introductory discount.

The specification worth reading carefully is the upload speed. Cable is asymmetric by design: the download figure in the plan name is the headline, and the upload is a fraction of it, where a full-fibre plan at the same advertised download will usually offer far more upstream. For streaming, browsing and video calls that difference is invisible. For anybody backing up large files to cloud storage, uploading video, or hosting rather than joining calls, it is the number that decides whether the plan suits.

Virgin Media is the only provider in our data on cable rather than fibre-to-the-home, which is why its upload speeds are worth checking against a fibre plan at the same download speed.

Virgin Media broadband questions

Is Virgin Media the cheapest broadband provider in Ireland?

Not overall. Virgin Media's best plan, Full Fibre 1Gb Broadband (12-month), ranks 7 of 22 plans we track, at about €420 over a first year against €319.88 for the cheapest plan on the market. Speed and availability differ between them, so the cheapest plan overall may not be sold at your address — see the full broadband comparison.

How much does Virgin Media broadband cost a month?

Virgin Media's cheapest plan opens at €35 a month for 12 months and then moves to €80 a month. Spread across the whole 12-month contract — that averages €35 a month. The monthly headline on its own is not the cost of the plan, which is why we publish both.

What broadband speeds does Virgin Media offer?

The Virgin Media plans in our data run from 500 Mbps up to 2 Gbps download, delivered over cable. What you can actually order depends on the network at your address rather than on the provider's price list, so run your eircode through the provider's checker first. Compare against every provider at the same speed on our broadband comparison.

What happens to my Virgin Media bill when the offer ends?

The account moves from the opening rate to Virgin Media's standard rate — €35 to €80 a month on its cheapest plan — as soon as the introductory months run out. There is no separate contractual annual increase on top of that in our data. Set a reminder a month before the offer expires: that is the point at which switching, or asking for a new deal, is worth the phone call.

How do I switch to Virgin Media?

Check availability at your eircode on Virgin Media's own site first — fixed broadband is sold address by address, and a plan advertised nationally may not reach you. If it is available, Virgin Media places the order and arranges any installation; you keep your existing service running until the new line is live, then cancel the old one, honouring whatever notice period it carries. Our guide to switching broadband covers contract end dates, notice and equipment returns.
