About SSE Airtricity
SSE Airtricity is the Irish retail arm of SSE plc, the Perth-based utility group, and it grew out of Airtricity, one of the first independent wind developers in Ireland. It supplies both electricity and natural gas to homes across the Republic, and it is one of the larger challengers to Electric Ireland and Bord Gáis Energy.
Its distinguishing pitch is that the electricity it sells is 100% green, matched against renewable generation. In practice all electricity in Ireland comes off the same grid, so a green tariff is a contractual and certificate arrangement rather than a physical one — worth knowing, but not a reason to discount the claim, since the group genuinely owns Irish wind capacity.
Commercially, SSE Airtricity runs a tiered discount ladder rather than one headline offer. The plan names carry the discount percentage, and the deeper tiers usually come with tighter conditions: direct debit, paperless billing, and often taking both electricity and gas. That makes it a supplier worth checking on our dual-fuel comparison rather than one vertical at a time.
The usual caution applies with force here, because the discounts are large: they run for 12 months from the contract start and then the account reverts to the standard rate. The standing charge is mid-market, so the plans suit average and heavy users better than very light ones. Switching is free, takes two to three weeks, and needs your MPRN or GPRN, a reading and bank details.
SSE Airtricity sells its electricity as green, backed by the group's wind generation in Ireland. Every plan we track from it is on a discount tier, so the number in the plan name is the first-year discount, not the rate.

SSE Airtricity electricity questions
Is SSE Airtricity the cheapest electricity supplier in Ireland?
On our ranking at 4,200 kWh a year, yes — Smart Green 15% Discount is the cheapest first-year plan we track, at about €1,296.92. That is an average-usage answer, though: change the usage or the meter type on the electricity comparison and the winner can change.
How much does SSE Airtricity electricity cost per year?
At the 4,200 kWh a year the CRU uses as a typical household, SSE Airtricity's cheapest plan comes to roughly €1,296.92 in the first year and €1,676.25 a year once introductory pricing ends. Those figures include the standing charge and the PSO levy but assume the usage split shown on this page. Use the table above to see what a low or heavy user would pay.
What meter types does SSE Airtricity support?
The SSE Airtricity plans in our data cover smart tariff, standard 24-hour meters. Your meter type is fixed by the hardware on your wall, not by the supplier, so check which one you have before comparing — a smart tariff on a household that cannot shift usage to the night band will usually cost more than a flat rate. See smart meter tariffs for how the bands work.
How do I switch to SSE Airtricity?
Switching is free and takes about two to three weeks, with no interruption to your supply. You need your MPRN, which is printed on any recent electricity bill, a current meter reading, and bank details — direct debit is required on the discounted plans. Set a reminder for month 11: the first-year discount ends at month 12 and the account rolls onto the standard rate. Our switching guides walk through the whole process.
