About Bord Gáis Energy
Bord Gáis Energy is the retail energy business that carried the old state gas board’s name into the deregulated market. It was sold to the British utility group Centrica in 2014, and the gas pipes themselves stayed in public ownership under Gas Networks Ireland — so the brand you buy gas from and the body that maintains your connection are two different organisations.
It sells both electricity and natural gas, and it is one of the few suppliers where taking both from the same company is a deliberate part of the pricing rather than an afterthought. On electricity it offers standard 24-hour and smart tariffs; on gas it offers a discounted plan and an undiscounted standard variable one.
The pattern to understand here is the size and shape of the discount. Bord Gáis Energy’s headline offers are among the deepest in the market, but they apply to unit rates for the first 12 months only, and they are conditional on direct debit and online billing. Its standing charges are not especially low, so the deal is strongest for medium and heavy users and weakest for a small apartment.
Because the discount lapses at month 12, the practical advice is the same as for any deep-discount supplier: put a reminder in your calendar for month 11 and either renegotiate or move. Switching requires your MPRN for electricity or GPRN for gas, a meter reading and bank details, and takes about two to three weeks.
Bord Gáis Energy is the best-known name in Irish residential gas because the network and the supply business once shared it. The network is now run separately by Gas Networks Ireland, and Bord Gáis Energy is simply one gas supplier among several.

Bord Gáis Energy gas questions
Is Bord Gáis Energy the cheapest gas supplier in Ireland?
Not at average usage. Bord Gáis Energy's best gas plan, Gas Discount, ranks 5 of 8 plans we track, at about €1,515.80 for the first year against €1,246.58 for the cheapest. See the full gas price comparison.
How much does Bord Gáis Energy gas cost per year?
At 11,000 kWh a year — a typical gas-heated Irish home — Bord Gáis Energy's cheapest plan comes to roughly €1,515.80 in the first year and €1,638.17 a year afterwards. Both figures include the standing charge and carbon tax on gas, currently 1.25c per kWh including VAT, which no supplier discount applies to.
Does Bord Gáis Energy include carbon tax in its gas rate?
Bord Gáis Energy quotes gas unit rates before carbon tax, so we add it back at 1.25c per kWh including VAT to get the annual figures on this page. Carbon tax is a government levy, it rises at each Budget, and no supplier discount is applied to it.
How do I switch to Bord Gáis Energy for gas?
Switching gas supplier is free and takes about two to three weeks; your supply is never interrupted and the meter stays with Gas Networks Ireland. You need your GPRN from a recent gas bill, a meter reading and bank details — direct debit is required for the discounted rates. The first-year discount ends at month 12, so diary a reminder for month 11. If you also buy electricity, check the dual fuel comparison before deciding.
