The same plan (Electricity Discount) priced at the three usage presets used across this site. A low user is hit harder by the standing charge, a heavy user by the unit rate — which is why one supplier can be cheapest for a flat and dearest for a family home.

About Bord Gáis Energy
Bord Gáis Energy is the retail energy business that carried the old state gas board’s name into the deregulated market. It was sold to the British utility group Centrica in 2014, and the gas pipes themselves stayed in public ownership under Gas Networks Ireland — so the brand you buy gas from and the body that maintains your connection are two different organisations.
It sells both electricity and natural gas, and it is one of the few suppliers where taking both from the same company is a deliberate part of the pricing rather than an afterthought. On electricity it offers standard 24-hour and smart tariffs; on gas it offers a discounted plan and an undiscounted standard variable one.
The pattern to understand here is the size and shape of the discount. Bord Gáis Energy’s headline offers are among the deepest in the market, but they apply to unit rates for the first 12 months only, and they are conditional on direct debit and online billing. Its standing charges are not especially low, so the deal is strongest for medium and heavy users and weakest for a small apartment.
Because the discount lapses at month 12, the practical advice is the same as for any deep-discount supplier: put a reminder in your calendar for month 11 and either renegotiate or move. Switching requires your MPRN for electricity or GPRN for gas, a meter reading and bank details, and takes about two to three weeks.
Bord Gáis Energy splits its smart range into an "All Day" tariff, which flattens the day and night rates, and a "Smart Standard" tariff with a genuinely cheap night band. Which one wins depends entirely on how much of your usage you can move after 11pm.

Bord Gáis Energy electricity questions
Is Bord Gáis Energy the cheapest electricity supplier in Ireland?
Not on average usage. Bord Gáis Energy's best plan, Electricity Discount, ranks 17 of 26 plans we track at 4,200 kWh a year, at about €1,653.77 for the first year against €1,296.92 for the market leader. See the full cheapest electricity providers ranking.
How much does Bord Gáis Energy electricity cost per year?
At the 4,200 kWh a year the CRU uses as a typical household, Bord Gáis Energy's cheapest plan comes to roughly €1,653.77 in the first year and €2,187.44 a year once introductory pricing ends. Those figures include the standing charge and the PSO levy but assume the usage split shown on this page. Use the table above to see what a low or heavy user would pay.
What meter types does Bord Gáis Energy support?
The Bord Gáis Energy plans in our data cover standard 24-hour, smart tariff meters. Your meter type is fixed by the hardware on your wall, not by the supplier, so check which one you have before comparing — a smart tariff on a household that cannot shift usage to the night band will usually cost more than a flat rate. See smart meter tariffs for how the bands work.
How do I switch to Bord Gáis Energy?
Switching is free and takes about two to three weeks, with no interruption to your supply. You need your MPRN, which is printed on any recent electricity bill, a current meter reading, and bank details — direct debit is required on the discounted plans. Set a reminder for month 11: the first-year discount ends at month 12 and the account rolls onto the standard rate. Our switching guides walk through the whole process.
