About SSE Airtricity
SSE Airtricity is the Irish retail arm of SSE plc, the Perth-based utility group, and it grew out of Airtricity, one of the first independent wind developers in Ireland. It supplies both electricity and natural gas to homes across the Republic, and it is one of the larger challengers to Electric Ireland and Bord Gáis Energy.
Its distinguishing pitch is that the electricity it sells is 100% green, matched against renewable generation. In practice all electricity in Ireland comes off the same grid, so a green tariff is a contractual and certificate arrangement rather than a physical one — worth knowing, but not a reason to discount the claim, since the group genuinely owns Irish wind capacity.
Commercially, SSE Airtricity runs a tiered discount ladder rather than one headline offer. The plan names carry the discount percentage, and the deeper tiers usually come with tighter conditions: direct debit, paperless billing, and often taking both electricity and gas. That makes it a supplier worth checking on our dual-fuel comparison rather than one vertical at a time.
The usual caution applies with force here, because the discounts are large: they run for 12 months from the contract start and then the account reverts to the standard rate. The standing charge is mid-market, so the plans suit average and heavy users better than very light ones. Switching is free, takes two to three weeks, and needs your MPRN or GPRN, a reading and bank details.
SSE Airtricity's gas plans mirror its electricity ones — the same tiered discount structure applied to the unit rate for 12 months, with the deeper tier usually reserved for customers taking both fuels.

SSE Airtricity gas questions
Is SSE Airtricity the cheapest gas supplier in Ireland?
On our ranking at 11,000 kWh a year, yes — Standard Gas 10% Discount is the cheapest first-year gas plan we track, at about €1,246.58. Change the usage on the gas comparison and the order can change.
How much does SSE Airtricity gas cost per year?
At 11,000 kWh a year — a typical gas-heated Irish home — SSE Airtricity's cheapest plan comes to roughly €1,246.58 in the first year and €1,541.76 a year afterwards. Both figures include the standing charge and carbon tax on gas, currently 1.25c per kWh including VAT, which no supplier discount applies to.
Does SSE Airtricity include carbon tax in its gas rate?
SSE Airtricity quotes gas unit rates before carbon tax, so we add it back at 1.25c per kWh including VAT to get the annual figures on this page. Carbon tax is a government levy, it rises at each Budget, and no supplier discount is applied to it.
How do I switch to SSE Airtricity for gas?
Switching gas supplier is free and takes about two to three weeks; your supply is never interrupted and the meter stays with Gas Networks Ireland. You need your GPRN from a recent gas bill, a meter reading and bank details — direct debit is required for the discounted rates. The first-year discount ends at month 12, so diary a reminder for month 11. If you also buy electricity, check the dual fuel comparison before deciding.
