About Electric Ireland
Electric Ireland is the domestic supply arm of the ESB and the successor to the old state electricity monopoly. It remains the largest residential supplier in the country by customer numbers and, because it inherited the incumbent’s customer base, it is the supplier most Irish households are already on when they first think about switching.
Its plan range is the broadest we track. It covers standard 24-hour meters, day/night NightSaver meters and smart meters, and it splits again between a green-tariff line and its Home Electric bundles. The headline discounts are applied for the first 12 contract months and then the account rolls onto the standard rate, so the plan that looks cheapest in year one is very often not the cheapest thereafter. Most of the discounted plans require both direct debit and paperless billing; drop either and the discount can be withdrawn.
A few things worth watching. Electric Ireland’s standing charge is at the higher end of the market, which matters more the less electricity you use — a light user can pay more here on a low unit rate than on a rival plan with a higher rate and a smaller fixed charge. Existing customers are not moved onto new discounts automatically, so a household that switched to Electric Ireland several years ago and has never called is almost certainly on the undiscounted standard rate today.
Switching away is free and takes roughly two to three weeks. You need your MPRN from a recent bill, a meter reading and bank details; the supply itself is never interrupted.
Electric Ireland sells a single residential gas product rather than a tiered range, so the comparison here is mostly about whether its dual-fuel arrangement beats taking gas from a specialist and electricity elsewhere.

Electric Ireland gas questions
Is Electric Ireland the cheapest gas supplier in Ireland?
Not at average usage. Electric Ireland's best gas plan, Gas, ranks 4 of 8 plans we track, at about €1,499.12 for the first year against €1,246.58 for the cheapest. See the full gas price comparison.
How much does Electric Ireland gas cost per year?
At 11,000 kWh a year — a typical gas-heated Irish home — Electric Ireland's cheapest plan comes to roughly €1,499.12 in the first year and €1,633.76 a year afterwards. Both figures include the standing charge and carbon tax on gas, currently 1.25c per kWh including VAT, which no supplier discount applies to.
Does Electric Ireland include carbon tax in its gas rate?
Electric Ireland quotes gas unit rates before carbon tax, so we add it back at 1.25c per kWh including VAT to get the annual figures on this page. Carbon tax is a government levy, it rises at each Budget, and no supplier discount is applied to it.
How do I switch to Electric Ireland for gas?
Switching gas supplier is free and takes about two to three weeks; your supply is never interrupted and the meter stays with Gas Networks Ireland. You need your GPRN from a recent gas bill, a meter reading and bank details — direct debit is required for the discounted rates. The first-year discount ends at month 12, so diary a reminder for month 11. If you also buy electricity, check the dual fuel comparison before deciding.
