About Energia

Energia is part of Energia Group, an all-island energy business that both generates and supplies. It owns and operates wind farms in Ireland and Northern Ireland and sells electricity and natural gas to homes and businesses in the Republic. Unlike the two incumbents it has no legacy customer base, so it has grown almost entirely by winning switchers, and its pricing tends to reflect that.

Its electricity range is built around the smart meter. If you have had a smart meter installed by ESB Networks, Energia gives you the widest choice we see: a flat smart tariff, a day/night split, and a plan aimed at households that actively shift consumption. If you are still on a legacy 24-hour meter, its range narrows to a single standard plan and the case for Energia rests on the discount alone.

Two things to check before switching. First, a smart tariff only pays if your usage profile actually matches it — the default assumption used across this site is 63% day, 28% night and 9% peak, and if most of your electricity goes in at teatime a smart plan can cost you more than a flat one. Second, as with every supplier here, Energia’s discount applies for the first 12 months.

Switching to or from Energia is free, takes about two to three weeks, and needs your MPRN or GPRN, a recent meter reading and bank details for direct debit.

Energia sells a single discounted residential gas plan rather than a range, so the comparison is straightforward: it is either cheaper than the alternatives at your usage or it is not.

Energia gas questions

Is Energia the cheapest gas supplier in Ireland?

Not at average usage. Energia's best gas plan, Standard Gas 10% Discount, ranks 3 of 8 plans we track, at about €1,393.59 for the first year against €1,246.58 for the cheapest. See the full gas price comparison.

How much does Energia gas cost per year?

At 11,000 kWh a year — a typical gas-heated Irish home — Energia's cheapest plan comes to roughly €1,393.59 in the first year and €1,517.41 a year afterwards. Both figures include the standing charge and carbon tax on gas, currently 1.25c per kWh including VAT, which no supplier discount applies to.

Does Energia include carbon tax in its gas rate?

Energia quotes gas unit rates before carbon tax, so we add it back at 1.25c per kWh including VAT to get the annual figures on this page. Carbon tax is a government levy, it rises at each Budget, and no supplier discount is applied to it.

How do I switch to Energia for gas?

Switching gas supplier is free and takes about two to three weeks; your supply is never interrupted and the meter stays with Gas Networks Ireland. You need your GPRN from a recent gas bill, a meter reading and bank details — direct debit is required for the discounted rates. The first-year discount ends at month 12, so diary a reminder for month 11. If you also buy electricity, check the dual fuel comparison before deciding.
