How to switch electricity supplier in Ireland
Switching is free and takes about 2–3 weeks. You need your MPRN (on your bill), a recent meter reading, and bank details for direct debit. Your supply is never interrupted during the switch.

Understanding your electricity bill
Irish electricity bills have three components: unit charges (per kWh used), a fixed standing charge, and the PSO levy (currently €1.59/mo incl. VAT). Discounts apply to the unit rate and sometimes the standing charge, but never to the PSO levy.

Smart meters & time-of-use tariffs
If you have a smart meter (installed free by ESB Networks), you can access day/night/peak tariffs. Peak hours (typically 5pm–7pm on weekdays) carry higher rates — shifting laundry and dishwasher use to night-time can cut your bill by 10–20%.

Broadband switching: what you need to know
Broadband introductory prices often double or triple after the first year. Set a calendar reminder for month 10 so you can switch before the standard rate kicks in. Check availability at your eircode — FTTH (full fibre to the home) gives the fastest and most reliable speeds.
